Is There a Way to Talk About the Gaps?
It's not easy, because if you're talking about somebody who's been doing one thing for ten or 15 years inside the company. The ones falls on them to be able to explain to a hiring manager why this individual has not just functional or domain expertise. It can be different sets of competencies. And unfortunately, i think most companies don't make that distinction and they promote people based on tenure and based on experience rather than separate competencies.
