This is part of a large project that's looking for dark energy in the universe. It was sort of intuited that it was there about, you know, 30 years ago. The universe we know is expanding because of the momentum given to it by the big bang. And astronomers have always assumed that gravity, which pulls things together, would be slowing down that expansion.
