The Origins of Francis Drake
Francis Drake was born in the English county of Devon sometime around the turn of the 1540s. By the 16th century maritime travel had advanced to a point where sea vessels could overcome the difficulties of the ocean's tidal currents pulling a ship off course. Francey Strake himself would come into the service of John Hawkins and so Drake would have first-hand experience of overseeing slave exchanges for himself. In 1568 Hawkins would lead six merchant ships across the Atlantic. Even with the abilities of modern ships travelling across the Atlantic was still quite risky and Hawkins was forced to dock at San Juan de Allure, the modern port city of Berra Cruz in Mexico. During this time it was considered
