There's a common pattern in other east asian economies. At some point of wealth, people demand democracy and it's given to them. I don't think china should have been a democracy all along. It probably would not have been stable. The wealthy western democracies so far have been quite stable as democracies. But the chinese model arguably is becoming less stable. All that ability to have surveillance will prove destabilizing rather than a good thing for them.
