What Makes a Joke So Funny

In evolutionary terms laughter probably goes back to slapstick comedy so I think it came in very very early on. How funny we perceive a joke to be depends on the number of mentalizing states in it. The more mind states involved in the joke the funnier it is up to the limit that we can cope with. It's like trying to read a post-modern novel and then nothing makes sense and it becomes less funny at that point.
