An example of a counterfactual could be a writer has a pad of paper that he only uses in an emergency or something like that. And the counterfactual is that the paper has the possibility of being written on, but it is not guaranteed one way or the other. So there are features of objects that we use in everyday life that are counterfactual and they explain why these objects are out there. If you want to tell a story about these objects without mentioning counterfactuals, that's a good analogy to understand what physics is trying to do currently with this phenomenon I mentioned earlier.
