China is a dominant force in Africa for some of the reasons that Helen said, this includes mineral extraction. Is there equivalent suspicion of China? Yes, there is. The debt distress that 50 countries now face is the product of rising interest rates in the West. But who are the debts owed to? The debts are increasingly owed to China and they're owed to the Chinese government. And many of the Chinese loans that involved building infrastructure, which was warmly welcomed, were built by Chinese laborers not by Pakistani or Kenyan laborers.
