The Importance of Parks and Squares
The topography of Manhattan really had to be changed and adjusted for the population to move. The Dutch are probably the most famous nation on earth for terraforming reclaiming land from the sea. For most of the 19th century, access to green space was limited to either these small pocket parks that dotted the landscape. Small parks like Washington Square Union Square served a more social purpose to anchor places around which wealthy New Yorkers could coalesce.
