Johan von staupetz, luther's friend and former confessor. Johan k had returned to rome with letters from several universities condemning luther. Particularly severe denunciation came from the dominicans at the university of cologne. Luther responds with cutting sarcasm: Why do we not abolish the gospel and turn instead to the universities? If they burn my books, i will simply repeat what i have said. I am so bold in this that i will suffer death for it.
