There are a couple of different policy levers so any government has to decide what to tax right assuming you have to have taxes on something. Some of these choices are going to have consequences not just for the total amount of well being in the world but also for the distribution of the goods and benefits. If you have an estate tax for example it affects the degree to which families can accumulate wealth that sort of sticks around over generations. Whether there's an estate tax or not has consequences for inequality downstream and it's something we should pay attention to.
