The Importance of Virtue
Homer found that the gods are kind of the ultimate standard of what is good and therefore not all goods are created equal. Those goods are in a hierarchy and the more truly good a good is, the more real pleasure you as a human being will get from learning to love and appreciate it. You might have all kinds of suffering, you might need to face all sorts of pain to get to that good,. but the more you experience virtue, the more you do the good.
