The Cycle of a Region's Governing Structure
Polybius writes that after some generations of rule by aristocrats, the aristocrats themselves become just as greedy and self-serving. What comes next is democracy; we today tend to hope that democracy will endure all the coming challenges. But Polybius was less optimistic: He says it soon corrodes into a regime driven by desperation, avarice and selfishness.
