One country is of course the United States, we say we can't afford it,. The other is Papua New Guinea, half of a big island north of Australia. Every other country in the world with a population of a million or more gives a national paid maternity leave policy. Take Sweden, one of the healthiest countries in theworld. It is mandatory to take 444 days of paid leave with your full pay. Swedish government spends more government money on the first year of life than in any subsequent year.
