The committee of public safety had been established back in march as a direct response to the terrible news coming down from belgium and then out of the vonde. The dominant figure of the first few months of the committee's existence was george danton, who had become, of late, a voice of moderation. Dontan's apparent willingness to bargain with the revolution's enemies rather than crush them, sparked a political back lash. And though danton would remain a powerful force for months to come, this is really the moment when he and the old quartly inner circle will begin their tragic march to the guillotine.
