In 1878, France's young engineers die and they just pickle the corpses. The thing that's most valuable about the canal winds up being the corpses of the men who try to build it. This almost leads to the collapse of the French government because it was such a big project. "It's hard to exaggerate how big of a fuck up this canal is," he says.
