The History of the Blue Ribbon Jury
The right to serve on a jury is part of enfranchisement and what it means to be a citizen. But that right has not been extended to all from the early days of the American Republic. The landmark US Supreme Court case that deals with this was Strouder v. West Virginia in 1880. Despite this ruling, many states continued to exclude people of color from juries. It was not until the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 60s that significant progress was made by state legislatures.
