Hifa was the first city of palestine as far as the british were concerned, because it was the mediterranean outlet of the oil pipe line they had built from mosul and arack. The degradation of the arab poor was more evident there than anywhere else. Arabs who had lost their farms, lost their land, lost their sense of agency. They suffered each day the indignity of begging for jobs from the people who had evicted them.
