Track side monitors that are supposed to detect overheated wheels long before they catch on fire have been part of the massive layoffs at Norfolk Southern. Dispatchers used to have a territory of a couple hundred miles; now dispatchers will cover entire regions of the country. Workers don't have as much time or resources to do the jobs that they used to do. It's just all of these risk factors kind of snowball to make disasters more likely.
