CHAPTER

Can the Patient Manage Their Secretions?

I think I just have anxiety when it comes to these patients when you extubate them. Do they have a history of airway surgery? Or are there multiple intubation attempts? Is there something about this patient that would set them up to be higher risk for having upper airway obstruction after that tube comes out? Exactly. That's kind of my indication to give the racemic epi. And then the last piece that I think about is really about can the patient manage their secretions. This becomes more of an issue for patients who have experienced a new traumatic injury or for kids who have chronic posterior for endural tone issues.
