The Importance of Character in Shakespeare
Jacqueline Rose: To concentrate on character at the expense of historical determinisms and social pressures is a problem for me. She says we have to look very, very carefully at what values you are promoting in the promotion of character so I can't help but notice that Hamlet is as ambivalent and divided consciousness as could possibly appear on the stage. Rosalind for example is normative beautifully harmonious and totally sane. So it seems to me that character is crucial but you have to ask not just what you can learn from these characters but what do they want from you?
