How Do We Understand Fusional States?
In the freudian and margaret malarian tradition, fusional states were seen as a regression back to primary narcisism. When an analyst saw this happening he immediately would tell the patient to sit up or go to the chair. He would abandon analysis. The clinians never believed that primary nar ism exists. They don't seeit as a falling back. They see it as the product of the pathological use of projective identification. Nowther it's not a collapse. It's what the patient is doing.
