Gretchen: It's really common, as you were saying tat, for different kinds of diagnoses to have a lot of similar symptoms involved in them. So part of your job is to figure out what's going on underneath that might best explain this. And it gets really complicated here. White children are diagnosed with a d h d at a considerably higher rate than either black or latin children. We're not over pathologizing minorities. But the problem is that those low rates of a d hd diagnosis are more than compensated for by disproportionately high rates of a diagnosis of conduct disorder. Or it could be that we're over diagnosing boys and under diagnosing girls.
