The Greeks and the Early Christian Church in Europe

One of the oldest Greek words in the English language is church. The word passed from Greek to Gothic Germanic tribes who had migrated into the Balkan region around 2nd century AD. Christian missionary work with the Goths in the 4th century led to the adoption of the Greek word and the expansion of the word northward throughout the Germanic tribes.
