The Different Interpretations of Quantum Mechanics
There's always a possibility that this is just a placeholder, a mathematical placeholder for something more deep down true. So maybe electrons and Higgs bosons and atoms aren't real in this sense, but are super useful as a mathematical construct. Some interpretations of quantum mechanics make exactly the same predictions at all conceivable circumstances. There doesn't seem to be any way to use the scientific method to tell us which of these we should prefer over the other.
