The use of loud noises to frighten away spirits or monsters is an ancient Chinese tradition. According to the Han Dynasty classic, the book of gods and spirits, these strange creatures would harass campfires in the night. They were also said in some traditions to carry a disease that could cause chills and fevers. Some reads on the Sheng Zhao certainly point towards actual apes as being at least part of it.
