President andrew jackson signed the measure into law on may 20 eighth 18 30. This act vastly extended the power of the federal government, and especially the president, hat over the tribes. Jackson's attitude toward tribe members was paternalistic, patronizing at best, contemptuous at worse. A lot of people at the time feel it was morally wrong not everyone held jackson's sentiments,. edward everett, a congressman from massachusetts said this as a part of a series of speeches on the indian removal act.
