Jim Bowie's wife was a rich girl, so he got 4,000 acres from the government. Since his wife was also entitled now to live at the Varaminde house, which was basically a palace because he's the governor of Texas. The sources I've read all tend to agree that he was legitimately in love with his wife and that the Var aminde family treated him as a son.
