The Meaning of Poetic Suggestion

The poet's art avoids explicit reference to the emotion he wants to produce. He instead implicitly suggests that emotion to the listener thus eliciting the desired rasa. For Ananda Vardana, suggestion is distinct from the function played by words when they have their straightforward meaning and neither is it an example of metaphorical language. By contrast, poetic suggestion leaves meaning straight-forwardly intact.
