The Importance of Silence in Art

I'm very aware of the British Museum as a constant presence and I think about that Virginia wolf quote. Everyone who goes in there sits for me you know unless I invite people in to look at my work so many years of silence is built into that space of people silently sitting for me. There's a mysterious quality to these paintings like Rembrandt was a slow painter they took a long time whereas if a painting takes a short time it's like a room that you've just moved into recently decorated with echoes still jangle don't they.
