Krakatoa event is probably the closest parallel that we have. We talked glibly about the way in which they were created, by coupling between pressure waves in the atmosphere and the ocean. And largely ignored that process thereafter in our warning systems for tsunami. It wasn't really until this event in Hoona that showed us, hey, those mechanisms are very real.
