What's the Cosmic Microwave Background?

The universe formed in the Big Bang, it was incredibly hot. Only after about 380,000 years did it cool down even enough for atoms to form. That allowed photons to travel through what was the very early universe. And this was the first light in the universe. The Planck satellite from ESA mapped the pattern of that early light,. and that's the cosmic microwave background. What we've just heard is that spectrum of radiation downshifted into an audible range. We're hearing much more of this sort of thing at the moment, aren't we?
