Understanding True Repentance and Its Roots
This chapter explores the complexities of obedience and true repentance through the lens of King Zedekiah's actions in Jeremiah 34. It highlights the pitfalls of attempting to manipulate God with superficial acts of obedience instead of fostering a genuine heart change.
When God’s Word threatens our comfort, the human instinct is often to silence it. In Jeremiah 34–37, King Jehoiakim does the unthinkable—he cuts up the prophetic scroll and burns it piece by piece. But destroying the message doesn’t stop God’s plan. These chapters reveal a chilling collision between political power, religious hypocrisy, and the uncompromising voice of God. They challenge us to consider: what do we do with truth that confronts us?

• Jeremiah delivers God’s message to King Zedekiah and the people, warning them about breaking covenant promises
• The leaders of Judah free their Hebrew slaves but quickly re-enslave them, violating God’s law
