The Power of Social Acceptance
Social acceptance and being liked has so much power, because it holds the feelings of loneliness at bay. The stuffed men are bound to become more lonely, no matter how much they lean together. Emptiness and loneliness are two faces of the same experience of anxiety. When a nation is prey to economic poverty and is psychologically and spiritually empty, totalitarianism comes in to fill the vacuum. People run to sell their freedom in order to get rid of the anxiety which is too great for them to bear any longer.
