A Lady Who Was Interested in the Ancient Past on Her Estate, Tranmer House, Sutton Ho

When her husband died, in her grief, she turned to spiritualism. It was a fairly popular sort of quasi religious movement among the victorian and early twentieth century middle class. Around sutton hho, there were clusters of mounds, just simple, round earthen mounds which were not unlike others that could be seen in various places around england,. especially east anglia. Nobody knew what they were, but there was speculation that they might be roman tumuli, or sort of tombs half set into the earth. Or alternatively, it may have been viking burial mounds.
