Early Structurelists Using a Semiotic Approach to Understanding Myths

Semeotic is the study of signs. Signs are things like words or pictures that act as a stand in for something else. Early structuralist started applying this semiotic approach towards deconstructing signs to understand mythology at a deeper level. A single word or a single sentence may have a surface level meaning that it's trying to denote, but there's often layers upon layers of different meanings.
