Dionysus is the spirit of tragedy, or dionysian impulse. But it was filtered through an apollonian impulse to create art in Greece. The two impulses were opposed by a non-imagistic form of art known as "dionysian music" D'Souza: We have gained much for the science of aesthetics once we realize this duality behind all forms of art.
