The bastard of uplands is very clearly a flowers. We don't know why he was competing as a mystery knight, whether he was trying to conceal his identity for some or not. It's a perfect example of all these concepts about figure God who a character is even without having an explicit name for them. Nina adds to this, one aspect of reach bastardy which black shield might embody is the ability for these men to use the prominence provided by such public displays of knighthood in order to form careers for themselves.
