If you scale it up to promising the moon, there's no point. Sometimes they set out for something and that just changes halfway through. I feel like this is why game designers are a strange beast. It has to come from an idea. Some of the best games are from one guy's vision or one guy's clever plan. If you're going to make a game, just make a game demo and see if it sucks. Another thing as well - don't be afraid to try new things. You never know what people will do with your ideas. There can be some really interesting stuff in open-world games. But most developers tend to focus on making them look good at all costs
