The Great Influenza Pandemic

When the flu pandemic began in 1918, World War I was still unfolding. Hospitals were understaffed because doctors and nurses were overseas helping soldiers. In 1921, insulin was discovered, making it possible to treat diabetes. All of these new medical discoveries needed a place to happen.
