Counterfactual Regretting

In Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics, he says that a self-indulgent person has no regrets because they just stand by their choice. But an incontinent person is subject to regrets and knows the good but can't live up to it. It's better to have regrets over ways that you fall in short of the good than not to. And one way of extending that grace is what for lack of a better term, I'm going to call counterfactual regretting.
