Eating scallops has been done for thousands and thousands of years by humans. There's essentially three types that we can talk about there are bait scallops or the small kind of baby sized scallops, then diver scallops which are the larger scallops and the shells. Frozen scallops typically because they're treated with a chemical that causes them to weep out a milky liquid when they're thawed so it makes it harder to sear them.
