Ukrainian Culture After the Second World War
The Soviet Union needs the Ukrainian economy because of, and this is a theme which literally goes back to the ancient Greeks. Athens depends on grain from what is now Ukraine,. It's a breadbasket so they need the economy, but they don't want it to be the Ukrainian economy. If they had let the Ukrainian peasants just grow the grain, they would have had bigger yields than they did on a collective-by-the-agriculture. Something similar can be said about Ukrainian culture after the Second World War - we need it, but we don't need it.
