Energy can only be rationalized in terms of a material in motion, e equals m c square. Energy has to mean something moving or it could be potential. And this is what was rationalized to us when Jule looked at Lavoiset's theory and was like, hey, I don't think there's a little fluid flying around. He thinks that these molecules are jittering about and that's how we get heat. So energy has to be considered in terms of material in motion.
