The Power of Unopened Gifts
The idea that a human being is not simply an animal has a very rich history. According to Darwinian theory, even the psychological, social and cultural attributes of the human being were introduced into the inanimate world by natural selection. Alfred Wallace was struck by this but couldn't reconcile what he understood with what he was claiming. He said: 'Human life seems to offer us this very suggestive account of unopened gifts in the human community'
