The next time Marie LeVoe would appear in the papers would be nine years later in 1859, when once again one of her voodoo rituals had been busted up. However, in this case, it seems like she was ratted out by a neighbor. In the eyes of Antebellum Law, black magic was always a secondary concern compared to the worrying mixing of people. One can't help but wonder if all the bad press that voodoo garnered in the 19th century wasn't simply an expression of a deeper anxiety about the mixed nature of New Orleans society.
