The Great Persecution of the Roman Empire
In the 200 fifties, many leaders were captured and killed or exiled from the roman empire. Christians were banned from meeting in cemeteries and other meeting places. The emperor diocletian was determined to reform and retrench the empire over all. He saw christian religion as sapping the strength and unity of the empire. And this served as a sort of test of the strength or resilience of the church; they passed the test.
