The Benefits of a Positive Blood Culture for Uncomplicated Pneumonia

It's almost case reportable that this patient had a helpful positive blood culture. It is really uncommon in kids and actually adults who have uncomplicated community acquired pneumonia to have a positive blood culture that is actually useful. Each of the labs can have about 3% contamination. And so especially in the ED and the outpatient setting where the risk of bacteria is even lower, you're more likely to get a scenario where you keep a kid longer and give them more antibiotics for no good reason.
