Do You Know if You're Using Behavior Parsing?

David Deutsch uses behavior parsing as proof that animals don't understand things. Richard Byrne believes that the right explanation there is that they're just mechanically learning to see lots of different maneuvers that accomplish something and then they're statistically pulling out what the correct maneuver is for themselves. Bois Duis says Apes actually are capable of recognizing a much larger set of possible meanings than we do. For example, when an ape learns new method of cracking nuts by hitting them with rocks it's always trivially true if he's making a radical statement or makes a radical statement about human understanding.
