Jim Jones had strategically aligned and partnered himself with black social movements and politics in San Francisco. His sermons drew packed churches and the temple had other branches in Los Angeles and Redwood Valley. It's the people's trust in Jim Jones that allowed him to establish his power through a culture of discipline, punishment, abuse, and even blackmail while the church was still in the US.
