The Cotton of African-Americans

Before the civil war in making county Alabama which is where Tuskegee is the single most cultivated crop was cotton. Other crops outnumbered cotton but as sharecropping emerges there's no reason to allow for landlords to allow people to plant anything other than cotton. Two-thirds of the cultivated land is in cotton by the end of the 1870s. Sharecroppers wind up basically in an endless cycle of dependence and debt.
